Three Ways Everyone Can Help!
On Friday, December 8th, NorthernStar submitted a 264 page letter of comment containing over 250 letters and petitions in support of their project. The letters were mainly form letters signed by members of a union in southern Oregon. A few original letters were sprinkled in along with a few supports from Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington. At least one letter was dated as far back as December, 2005. Overall, it was not a strong showing of support for a project this big. It was also striking that NortherStar had to go to Redmond and Klammath Falls to get most of the signatures.
Of particular interest is the fact the FERC evidently registers all those letters as one (1) submission in support. Therefore, I have attached the beginning of a sample letter of comment to the FERC with the name and address of to whom to mail it. You may also submit your letter of comment through the FERC website. Our goal is to swamp the FERC with these letters. It costs you a little bit of your personal time, paper and envelope along with a 39 cent stamp. What you get out of it is the satisfaction of having told your side of the story with the general public able to read it. No editing will take place and you are pretty much guaranteed publishing on the FERC website. Include comments on the recent mailings, ads, weather issues, emminent domain, ground shift, slides, earthquakes, environmental issues and on and on. There is no limit to the number of words, topics or pages. Hand-written letters are 500 times more powerful than form letters or petitions.

Next--NorthernStar has submitted full page ads to all the newspapers in the "affected" area from Astoria to Longview/Kelso along both sides of the river. We want to run rebuttal 1/4 page ads on several different days. One of our artistic members is working on the artwork side of it. In order for this to happen, we need additional funding. We know it's the holidays, but think of this as a gift to yourself in that it may save your property and keep you and your family safe along with the environment. Please send your donation to:
        LCSC, 4503 Ocean Beach Hwy, Suite 108 PMB#531, Longview,WA 98632

Third--Now is an extremely important  time to write letters to the editor to all papers up and down the Columbia. NorthernStar did us a favor with their ad campaign--people are tired of receiving the cards, letters and brochures in their mailbox. We need those of you who have never written to do so now. Those who've been writing, thank you and keep on writing. The public needs to know this is a fight of many and not just a few. It was pointed out recently that 2 letters to the editor provide the same impact as a half-page ad.

Those are three ways you can raise your voices and be heard. Make your opinion count.

Finally, we have garnered support from the Lower Columbia Realtors in that they believe our property values WILL go down if this pipeline goes in. They will be doing a major campaign in January to assist us in this cause. Make sure you thank any realtors you know. We truly appreciate their assistance.

Along with the Realtors, a Democratic group in Central Washington is coming on board to work with us. They have connections in Idaho and Montana and will work through legislative and environmental groups to put pressure on our Governor to stand up and fight for us. She has been extremely quiet on this issue.
A list of people, agencies, and newspaper addresses are listed below.

RE:       NorthernStar Natural Gas, LLC

            Bradwood Landing, LLC

            Dockets: CP06-365-000; CP06-366; CP06-376-000; CP06-377-000

Dear Ms. Salas,

We have been the recipients of a recent advertising blitz by NorthernStar Natural Gas. The use of a map from the days of Lewis and Clark is extremely misleading to the general public. The fact they chose to add the cities of Astoria, Skamokawa, Cathlamet and Bradwood is an attempt to make the map appear more modern and, thus correct. What is missing are the islands, sandbars, and general dangerousness of the passage from the mouth to the Bradwood site. Their insistence that the islands were not there when Lewis and Clark traveled down the Columbia is ludicrous.

Captain Robert Gray noted the existence and grave danger of the Columbia River a few short years later when he brought his ship, the Columbia, across the bar into the river. Let me remind you, Captain Gray was the first to navigate a ship into the river and reported the many dangers did indeed exist in the form of shallow waters, sand bars, islands and sunken trees.  Because Lewis and Clark chose not to include the islands in their drawing does not mean they were not there!

The map NorthernStar chose to use was a ploy to deliberately mislead people. How nice it is to show investors the mighty Columbia with a beautiful, wide shipping channel. How nice to show the public the calm, safe Columbia along with promises to bring back the salmon. Those of us who live here are not impressed and not sold by this ad campaign.

Also, what happened to Puget Island directly across the channel from Bradwood? Are we being led to believe it does not exist or that it will not exist when NorthernStar gets done with their project.

Etc…..

Sincerely,
