Re:Cowlitz Co. Democratic Central Committee Meeting/Cacus Instructions of 2/04/08
At the meeting of the Cowlitz Co. Democratic Central Committee on Cacus Instructions
for 2/09/08 a question was put to CC,Commissioner Kathleen Johnson by Democratic,PCO
Bill Kaicsh of Longview on the stance of Cowlitz County towards LNG.Commissioner,
Johnson said;"The county was generally leaning against LNG and the the proposed pipeline
,".Commissioners Johnson has 2 Democratic opponents in the upcoming 2008 primary and
general election. No GOP opponent has anounced at present.Commissioner Johnson has
also not declared her intention to run for reelection.
As a side note at Longview City Councilman,Ken Batero's informal public get together at the Monticello Hotel
on 2/4/08,former candidate Ken Spring mentioned the issue of LNG.Ken
Batero was then informed the allied NG Pipeline with the Bradwood LNG facility would
cross city property in the Lone Oak Road area, near a city water tank.As a solution to the
City of Longview's water problems a citizen in attendance said if the NG Line ruptured near
the city water tank it might solve some of the cities water shortage problems. To which
Councilman Batero replied,"That's what I like,constructive solutions,".End quote.

Re:Conference After Action Report.
Brent Foster did okay mustering the college students. The public could not ask questions.
But he got the Lewis&Clark student, one of the 9 students from OR.colleges, to ask Kulongoski why he
supports LNG?. Kulongoski went in to his"bridge routine",to which students in the audience gave him a "Bronx Cheer".For short
notice,Foster,Serres,and the
students did okay.
Also they had LNG flyers all over the Chiles Center in a crowd that was between 2500 and
3000.I saw three of the flyers and I was 20min's late and sat in the nose bleed section up
high. For a Catholic University known to be conservative it even surprised me.As it did the
college provost,a Catholic monk who said he was surprised at the turnout in his opening
remarks.
Weather and driving conditions stunk, with rain-snow mix in low hanging fog.Visibility stunk too with traffic heavy.Needless
to say getting there took a little effort. So it was a surprising
turnout.
Saw Foster there and he looked more than pleased. With the weather conditions, time of event, and short notice,he's justified
to be pleased. end

The Stars in protest
September 13, 2006
Dear Malibu Resident,
We, your neighbors, are extremely alarmed by the Cabrillo
Port Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility that is being proposed off the coast of Malibu and Oxnard by BHP Billiton. We
want to stop the BHP Billiton LNG Terminal now!
BHP Billiton, the largest mining company in the world, intends
to build a massive floating LNG terminal just 14 miles off our coast. Once built, the terminal will be the length of three
football fields, 14 stories high and will receive, store and process LNG, a highly flammable substance, from huge LNG tankers
that arrive at least two to three times a week from various foreign countries.
This LNG project poses significant
and potentially irreversible negative impacts to our coast, our environment and to the health and safety of our families and
is currently on track to receive its first approval as early as December 2006. Grassroots community opposition
successfully kept LNG out of Humboldt Bay and Mare Island. We can keep LNG out of our community too, but time is of the essence
and we need your help.
There have been several hazardous and even fatal accidents associated with LNG facilities in
the United States and around the world. For example, in 2004 an explosion at an LNG liquefaction facility in Algeria killed
27 and injured 80. Unlike the natural gas that you use in your house for heating and cooking, LNG is a liquid fossil fuel,
which must be converted back into a gaseous state. It is during this regasification process that the potential for a catastrophic
event can occur.
In addition to posing grave threats to our safety, there are other problems with this project. This
floating LNG terminal will emit more than 200 tons of smog-producing pollutants per year, in an area long known for high occurrences
of asthma in both children and adults. Additionally, it is estimated that the project as a whole will emit 25,000,000 tons
of greenhouse gas emissions annually, further contributing to global warming. The proposed LNG terminal will also be tremendously
harmful to the ocean’s ecosystem and marine life. The negative impacts from this project on our air, our water and our
environment are potentially devastating.
Further, in 2003, an alarming Congressional Research Report stated that LNG
posed “a serious hazard of explosion or fire” and described LNG terminals and tankers as “vulnerable to
terrorist attack.”
Beginning this September there will be a series of public forums where you can voice
your concerns and lend your support. For more information, or to find out how you can help stop this project, please visit
www.coastaladvocates.com or call 310-230-4210.
We are determined to protect all of our families’ health, safety and quality
of life. As concerned residents, we hope you will join us.
